Why do people think that global warming is FAKE?

Because it is fake. DUH!

It's a fad.

In 10 years time you aren't going to admit that you once believed in AGW.

Maybe because it's been getting colder for the last ten years.

Because the same activist groups that have sought to force lifestyle changes on Americans and have sought larger government for dozens of other reasons have latched on to global warming, have repeated for two decades now that the end is near, have had to adjust their timetable for the end of the world, and their story, as the world simply doesn't end and the temperatures have stopped rising, and because they stubbornly insist, despite having no actual proof of their claims, after twenty years and tens of billions of dollars of taxpayer-funded research dollars.

We repeatedly ask for proof and that's all we want. But all we get are meaningless replies of "consensus" and "denier!"

I for one just got done shoveling snow in freezing temps. I don't know where you are but there isn't much warming here.

Because we are now in a cooling trend that started in 1998.

I just read about the Vikings farming Greenland 800 or so years ago and it was a similar cooling trend that made them stop.

The earth cools and it warms and it's been going on forever. The global warming hype of late is just an attempt by government and some greedy others that want to profit from the hype to take advantage of those that think it is a real problem. Any serious look at past warming trends shows that in those times life thrived on most of the earth. Most of the land is in the far north and yes some life had to Adapt but most thrived.

Talking of people being "non-scientific lies" and then posting an "opinion piece" (twice) and this comment "which cause problems for people" from what I have seen of Dana's Q/As the only problems he might cause are for those that spread complete B/S that isn't based on facts, you know, like this comment at the start of you answer

You of course can't post a link that supports this statement because it simply isn't true.
If you actually tried to look at the various atmospheric science sites you would quickly find you are incorrect.

and it is repeatedly given to you from sources like NASA, NSIDC, GISS, the Hadley Center the response is usually you can't trust them it's all a plot the communists are doing it, its Al Gore lying, the U.N. want to rule the world etc etc
Dismissing the "consensus" isn't even slightly logical you dismiss the acknowledged experts and instead go with radio weathermen who run blogs sites.

Actually global warming is now being reduced by pollution;
due to the brown cloud from Saudi Arabia covering China.
Global warming is definitely happening & measurable!
The debate is about the cause; attributed to greenhouse gases.
The issue is whether the increase is man-made or a natural cycle.
Burning of fossil fuels is the major human contribution.
But secondary is methane from animal waste such as pigs & cattle.
This would not be a major contribution except for farming for meat.
Third place goes to forest fires & jungle burn-off, due to development.
Natural causes like volcanoes are minor contributors.

A lot of people are ignorant fools who don't want to cut back on their lifestyles or quit driving large gas guzzlers.

It's not fake. Just because it's getting colder in some places doesn't mean it's not real. It's called CLIMATE CHANGE not global warming.

Denial is a pretty natural reaction to fear.

Some people can't face up to the fact that we're causing such damage to the environment. It means changing the way we do things, and it means government intervention. Some people are afraid both of change and of large government.

Rather than face up to the reality of the situation, they simply deny it.

Because any and all of the credible atmospheric scientists tell us that unequivocally it is bogus science and that it doesn't exist.

I think everyone is confused. Yes, there has been a cooling trend since 1998, yet the polar caps have been melting causing sea levels to rise which attributes to destroying the gulf stream. I don't know what to think anymore.

A lot of it has to do with Al Gore. People simply get offended by a man who tells them their lifestyle is wrong and even more so when he asks them to change it. But rather than realize that he is just one single man, and instead of hating this single man, they started to question the whole idea of man-made global warming in general. This is quite ridiculous, since he of course did not invent it and is not even a scientist, but people don't need an excuse to be ignorant.

There are a host of other reasons too. Some people enjoy the thrill of being different, of thinking they are smarter than the masses by not letting themselves get duped into something everyone else believes (many global warming deniers also believe 9/11 was a conspiracy).

Some people hate absolutely anything that has to do with being environmentally friendly (the older, very right wing conservative folks who have absolutely no idea what the environment even is or why it's important.)

Some people saw one minor error in some obscure aspect of global warming, and immediately felt every single part of global warming science is incorrect.

Some (actually a surprisingly high number of people) even think that the whole point in global warming is for people to take over the world. Who these people are, and how something as obscure as global warming will make that happen has never really been clarified.

Oh, and the final reason is that they say there is no concrete "proof" for it, as if global warming could somehow be proven in three steps like a geometry theorem. I've asked several times what exactly "proof" means to them, what it is they are waiting for, and not a single person has ever given me a concrete answer. I swear they are waiting for us to build a second planet Earth next to our own and conduct the 300 year experiment again, but even then I'm sure they'd find ways to criticize the results.
