What is a network server?

  • & What does it do?

  • a network server can have a number of roles. in a small business environment it usually serves as a single server doing a lot of jobs.
one would most likely be file storagfe for the files used on the computers of the business network. another common use is domain name resolution. Running DNS service on this server is the common practice to resolve websites and other machine names in and out of the network. Another common use is DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP is what gives out IP addresses to the computers on the network so they can communicate.
another is Print services. the installation of networked printers on this server will make the printer available as a network resource to hosts inside that network.

  • when we talk about networking, there is only two computer will communicate (basic networking). One is act as a server and second one must be a client or workstation.

The role of Server is to 'give' while client is to retrieved information from server.

So network server can simply called a server.
