Unknown Device Installed?

  • I was opening up Windows Live Messenger when the internet went down. It said that my Gateway was off, but it wasn't. I restarted my computer and it said "Unknown Device Successfully Installed" when I had not plugged anything in. I'm running a scan with Windows Defender, but will that find anything?

  • hi - unknown device is new hardware not software so running virus and spyware program will not help at this point dealing with live messenger would be microphone or webcam - for what ever reason you computer as re-download one or both of these hardwares i do not see a problem if you have already did your scans -so go fore and have fun

  • Well a device needs drivers to run, I think, so to check what driver was the latest downloaded, you might try this:
Start - Run - type, or copy & paste this in the run box:
    %SystemRoot%System32Drivers

When the window opens, click on View at the top, then 'customize this folder', and when that opens, make sure the date created box is checked.
Then you can find the latest driver loaded. You may need to write it down, and do a search to see what it does.

That link explains about gateways; may be helpful to understanding what your looking for.

I suppose virus or spyware could be downloaded in driver downloads.
Hope that didn't happen. Good Luck -
Oh, I have xp, so am going by that

  • Run your Windows Defender, get Spybot - Search and Destroy, and run a scan with that. Then use anti-virus software like AVG free edition to see if there's anything else. If you find something that looks like a virus (AVG will alert you for that, spybot will fix registry problems and spyware), then take care of it. If nothing comes up, just ignore it.
